Surgical Stent Precautions

If you were given a surgical stent following a soft tissue graft, wear it as directed by your doctor. The stent protects the donor site on the roof of your mouth and can help reduce discomfort and bleeding.

• Wear the stent continuously for the first 48 hours unless instructed otherwise. During this time, remove it only if necessary.
• After the first 48 hours, the stent may be removed for gentle cleaning and rinsing. Rinse the stent with cool or lukewarm water and gently brush it as needed. Do not use hot water, as this may distort the stent.
• Continue wearing the stent as needed for comfort and protection, especially while eating, for the first week, or as directed by your doctor.
• Do not force the stent into place if it is uncomfortable, does not fit properly, or causes pressure on the grafted area.
• If bleeding occurs from the roof of your mouth, replace the stent and apply firm pressure by gently biting down. If bleeding continues despite firm pressure, contact our office.
